Toruń –  city of Nicolaus Copernicus

Toruń is a city in central Poland, through which the Vistula River flows – the biggest river in Poland. It’s a city inhabited by 200 thousand residents, one of two capital cities of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship – seat of the voivodeship marshal and voivodeship self-government bodies.
Toruń is one of the oldest Polish cities. It gained its urban rights as far back as 1233 and in the middle ages was one of the Hanseatic cities, with very strong economic and political influence.

Here, in 1473, the famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus was born – creator of the heliocentric theory. Toruń’s old town entered the World Heritage List of UNESCO with its beautifully preserved historical buildings from this period, and unique monuments. In our town, numerous museums and galleries, can be found where the history of the town can be sclovered. The 19th and 20th- century fortifications of the Fortress of Toruń are unique monuments on an international scale.
Nowadays, Toruń is a large economic, cultural, scientific, academic, and tourist centre and an important road and railway hub.

The unusual tourist attractions of Toruń are appreciated both in Poland and abroad. The city is a leader in the region in terms of tourism and every year is visited by almost two million guests – and the number is gradually increasing. The accommodation is very rich and varied and the many hotels, hostels, and pensions can sleep up to several thousand people.

The city offers accommodation in three- and four -star hotels which provide a wide variety of recreational facilities, including swimming pools, gyms, and spas. The cost of hotels located in the neighbourhood of the old town varies between 40€ to 80€ per day.

At present  there are five honorary consulates in Toruń (from ten located in whole region) :  Peru, Slovenia, Lithuania, Finland and Moldova. Furthermore in town located is a branch of French Embassy in Warsaw.

Toruń has very rich and varied culture on offer consisting of, among other things, three professional theatres, several amateur theatres, dozens of museums, exhibition galleries, and hundreds of cultural events including

theatre presentations of significance both locally and abroad as well as music and film festivals. The pride of the city is the modern Cultural – Congress Centre Jordanki (CKK Jordanki), where performances, concerts, and other interesting events are regularly held.

Toruń is also known as the town of sport. There are more than 50 sport disciplines here, some of which are at the highest level of the performance. Toruń players for years have reached for valuable trophies with the medals of the Olympic Games, the World Championships and Europe including.

Town of Nicolaus Copernicus has very wealthy, modern and complete sports infrastructure. Since few years special pride of Toruń is greatly modern and multifunctional sports hall – Arena Toruń. Although representatives of many different disciplines use the facility, athletic events are particulary important. The hall Has a fixed 200-meters treadmill  and other infrastructure enabling to carry out athletic competition at the highest national and international level. It’s in the Arena Toruń took place Xth European Masters Athletics  Championships Indoor in 2015, in which participated 2186 participants from 37 countries within over dozen Olympians. They competed in 21 competitions. We’ve noticed almost 5 thousand starts. The best ones were decorated with 1689 medals. Sport level was very high. Top class surface let the participants beat 150 European, World and European Championships Records.

In hall every year there is international athletic meeting Copernicus Cup, rated at this time in the prestigious cycle IAAF World Indoor Tour, what make it one of five most important indoor athletic meeting in the whole world. The biggest stars of athletics compete in it.

Among the participants starting in previous edition were such stars as Genzebe Dibaba, Tomasz Majewski, Kim Collins, Mohamed Aman, Adam Kszczot, Timothy Kitum and Pavel Maslak. Town applays also for organizing European Indoor Athletics Championships.

Toruń is well known in Poland and all over the world from professional organization sport events. Very positive outcome had also rating of the Xth Indoor European Masters Championships.

This rate motivated the authorities of city Toruń and Polish Masters Athletics to apply for right  to organize World Masters Athletics Championships Indoor. The result of this effort  was decision of council World Masters Athletics of  30 October  2016. Delegates of WMA in Perth decided that World Masters Athletics Championships Indoor 2019 will be organized in Toruń.

World Masters Athletics Championships Indoor will be held March 24-30, 2019.
